The Journey Begins
We started our journey from Mumbai, taking a train to Bandra, and then hopping into an auto to reach Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). From there, we boarded our Madgaon Express, a 3AC coach chosen specifically for its balance of budget and safety—perfect for female travelers and comfort-seekers alike. Our fellow passengers were just as excited about their own Goa plans, and the excitement was already in the air.
Although the plan had been in the air for months, it truly began spontaneously—one of those “let’s just go” kind of mornings. And it turned out to be one of the best decisions we made.
Local Travel on a Budget
After arriving at Thivim Station, we took a local bus to Mapusa and then another crowded—but quite adventurous—ride to Calangute. The local buses were packed with people, but it gave us an authentic taste of local life in Goa. Of course, you could opt for a taxi or private vehicle for more comfort, but the bus ride felt more real and fun. Plus, it kept us within budget!
Where We Stayed
Our homestay was perfectly nestled between Candolim and Calangute—just a 2-minute walk from the beach. The area was lively, surrounded by fresh fruit stalls, eateries, shops, and liquor stores. It was everything we needed right at our doorstep.
Our host arranged a scooter rental for just ₹450 a day with a ₹1000 deposit and valid ID. It was the best way to explore Goa on a budget, and the freedom to zip around was priceless.
A quick tip for all solo or female travelers: we were advised to avoid speaking to strangers offering scooter rentals or accommodations. It’s always better to be cautious and not entertain unsolicited offers. This simple advice helped us feel safe and kept unnecessary drama at bay.
Beach Hopping: Candolim, Baga, and Beyond
Once we were settled, we kicked off our beach-hopping adventures:
Candolim & Sinquerim – These beaches were all about luxury and tranquility. Fewer crowds, pristine sand, and comfortable shacks that felt like a mini-retreat. The calm ambiance here made it the perfect spot to unwind and soak up the sun.
Baga – This beach surprised us with its vibe! It had a lively energy without feeling overcrowded. Music from beachside cafés, people dancing barefoot in the sand—it was like a relaxed party in the making. The perfect spot for those who enjoy a bit of buzz but not chaos.
Calangute – We made a quick stop here but found it to be the most crowded. It didn’t quite have the same charm as the other beaches, so we didn’t linger too long.
Arambol – A bit farther out, but definitely worth the long ride. The boho vibe here was unmatched—live music, colorful stalls, and the feeling that you were in a different world. Sitting on the beach, snacking on pineapples, and watching the sunset was the perfect end to our adventure-filled day.
Club Cabana: Nightlife at its Best
One of the highlights of our trip was Club Cabana, a hilltop nightclub that gave us a whole new perspective on Goa’s nightlife. The view of the city lights from the top was absolutely mesmerizing. The club is dotted with various seating areas—near the neon-lit pool, by the disc, and along the climb up. As you reach halfway, club staff take you the rest of the way to the top. It’s a surreal experience and a must-visit for anyone seeking a unique nightlife experience.
Offbeat Finds & Food
Goa isn’t just about beaches; it’s about hidden streets, cultural pockets, and flavorful surprises. One such gem is Fontainhas in Panaji—Goa’s Latin Quarter. Walking through its narrow, colorful lanes felt like stepping into a Mediterranean postcard. The Portuguese-style houses, art galleries, and quaint cafés offered a peaceful escape from the usual beach buzz.
Another delightful experience was visiting the Houses of Goa Museum. Tucked right in the middle of the road, this uniquely structured museum is as intriguing as it is informative. With a school on one side and the owner’s house and an exhibition gallery on the other, the setting itself was fascinating. What made the visit even better? On purchasing the ticket, we received food and beverage coupons that worked like vouchers. We enjoyed a fresh sandwich and two flavored soda drinks—simple, but surprisingly refreshing!
On another day, we took a breezy ride through the iconic Parra Road, lined with palm trees and scenic fields—a stretch made famous by Bollywood. The road itself feels cinematic, especially during golden hour, and it’s a must-visit if you're chasing Goa’s natural charm.
We stopped by the Se Cathedral and grabbed a comforting vegetarian meal at Kamat Restaurant, a local favorite. As we cruised along the Mandovi River, the glowing casinos and river cruises sparkled in the distance, giving us a glimpse into Goa’s vibrant nightlife.
From fresh coconuts and pineapples on the beach to coleslaw sandwiches and onion bhajis, every snack added to the journey. It’s these small indulgences that made the trip feel truly complete.
A Relaxing Finale
On our last day, we kept it simple. We spent the entire day at Candolim Beach, doing nothing but soaking up the sun, sipping fresh juices, and taking occasional dips in the water. Sometimes, doing nothing is the best way to wrap up a great trip.
Final Thoughts
This spontaneous 5-day trip to Goa was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and budget-friendly travel. We didn’t need a lot of money to create unforgettable memories. With the right planning, a spirit of adventure, and a little caution, even a spontaneous getaway can become a beautiful journey.
